Lawn Fawn - You Brighten My Life Card

Happy Saturday! Today I wanted to share a card I made for the current Lawnscaping Challenge. They asked for black and white cards with a splash of color and I came up with this idea:

I knew I wanted to do an underwater scene using gray tones instead of blues so I started with a piece of Distress Watercolor Cardstock and a few Distress Inks. With an ink blending tool, I started with Squeezed Lemonade distress ink and created a little circle in the middle. Next I used Pumice Stone Distress Ink to color in all around the circle making sure just to go over the edges of the circle. Then I laid on a wave stencil and used Hickory Smoke Distress Ink color to create the look of ocean waves. Lastly, I took Black Soot Distress Ink and went around all of the edges to give it a bit more depth. Once the piece had dried, I took my distress sprayer and squeezed out a few water droplets. I immediately regretted it and tried to dry it off. I was able to cover most of them up with more distress ink. Lesson learned!

Next I colored each little fish with varying tones of neutral gray Copic markers. Since I knew the little jelly fish was going to be a center light I had to arrange the fish first and color them appropriately so they appeared to be highlighted by the jelly fish. This took a little bit to figure out but I loved the result. I then colored my jelly fish in yellow and orange Copics and covered him in two coats of clear Wink of Stella to ensure he really shined!

Before I adhered the fish, I grabbed a sentiment from another Lawn Fawn set and heat embossed it in white. I also went around the yellow area with more clear Wink of Stella. I really wanted this area to sparkle. I choose to use some multi medium matte to attach the fish so that I had a bit of wiggle room to make sure they were in the correct places. I also wanted to keep them all flat. I popped up the jelly fish with two layers of foam tape and in person this really helps to make him the center of the card. My last step was to adhere the panel to a A2 size black card. Here's a close up:

I just love how the little jelly fish seems to be radiating light! I really had fun staying away from color and loved being challenged to work in just grays. This really helped me to work on my Copic shading technique. I remember a similar exercise we did in the Copic Certification class.

Be sure to pop over to the Lawnscaping Challenge blog and check out the amazing creations some of the designers came up with. They are awesome! Have a great weekend and I'll be back soon!

  6. This is so clever and fun! GREAT coloring! I love how you explained that you had to determine the placement of the fish before coloring them in, to get the lighting effect right. I hadn't thought of that until reading your description. GREAT attention to detail here!
